Experienced people rarely lack knowledge. They lack filters.

Fifteen years of experience gives you a lot of options. Choosing one offer to test first is where most of the real work happens.

When you’ve worked for ten or fifteen years, you can help people with a surprising number of things. You can run a workshop, fix a messy process, coach a new manager, write the strategy deck and present it to the board. Most of my clients arrive with a long list of things they could offer, and a quiet worry that choosing one means wasting all the others.

So they keep the list open. They build a website that mentions everything, and an introduction that takes two minutes to get through. When someone asks what they do, the answer starts with “well, it depends”.

I understand the instinct. In a corporate role, range is rewarded. Being the person who can step into anything is how you get promoted, and it feels risky to suddenly narrow yourself down to one thing when your whole career has taught you the opposite.

A new business works differently, though. The people you want to reach are busy, and they’re scanning for one signal: is this person for me, with this problem, right now? A list of eight services makes them work too hard to find the answer.

What helps is a filter, and it’s usually simpler than people expect. Which problem do you most enjoy solving? Which one have people already paid you, or your employer, to solve? And which one could you test with real people in the next month? The offer that sits in the middle of those three is almost always the right place to start.

You won’t lose the rest. The other skills don’t disappear because you’ve chosen a front door. They show up later, inside the work, as the reason clients stay.

Over the years I’ve noticed that the clients who move fastest aren’t the ones with the best ideas. They’re the ones who were willing to pick one, slightly before they felt ready.
